Abstract
Purpose : Department of Health Manpower Development (DHMD) in the National Institute of Health has been training officials working in the Ministry of Health and Welfare, institutes under control of the Ministry, city, county, ward office, health center, and other social welfare facilities. The Department provides them with a variety of training courses according to their position, duty, license, and qualification. The DHMD also provides up-to-date education in conformity with changes in public health and medicine. However inefficient assessment of training needs, inadequate feedback of training results, poor detection of the population for health education, and poor supply of information on training show limitations for developing their potential ability and estimating demand of education. Therefore, there is a need to develop an appropriate level of computerized information system in DHMD, in keeping abreast with the establishment of information system by the Korean central government.
Methods : In this research, we developed accurate assessment of training needs and to establish proper education planning. 1. Database construction of health manpower resources 2. Database construction of the faculty 3. Database construction of training register 4. Development of an education planning system 5. Decision support system for the development of health manpower resources 6. Development of an Intra-Net and a homepage
Result : 1. Database construction of training records (register); We have developed a computer program for database construction on training records and inputted training records form the last 8 years(¢¥92-¢¥99). 2. Database construction of health manpower; We have developed a computer program for database construction of health manpower and inputted records of about 20,000 health workers (Feb, 2000). 3. Development of computerized management system on training needs and training records. ; We have developed a computerized management system of training needs and training records using the database on training register and health manpower. 4. Construction of an Inter-Net homepage; We have developed an Inter-Net homepage including information on education planning, BBS, and education materials.
Conclusions : This study was not to develop a new computing techniques and public health theory, but to focus on the practical use of these results. We have developed this program in cooperation with the officials in charge. We expect this program to help the development and planning for public health manpower.
